For cheap eats near UPV, the short answer is Algirós: La Shawermeria, at Carrer del Clariano 6, serves Palestinian shawarma and falafel — all halal — to take away. The counter is open 1pm–4pm and 7:30pm–11:30pm, and online orders run straight through, 1pm to 11:30pm. It is a few minutes on foot from the Camí de Vera campus and from Blasco Ibáñez.
Where is it, walking from campus?
Algirós is Valencia's university neighbourhood: UPV's Camí de Vera campus on one side, the Universitat de València's Blasco Ibáñez campus on the other, and the student flats in between. Clariano 6 sits in that strip. No metro, no bus — it is a walk you can do in the gap between two classes.
Can you eat there, or is it takeaway only?
Takeaway only, and it is worth being straight about it: Clariano 6 has no tables, no table service and no toilet. It is a pick-up counter. You order, wait for the meat to come off the spit, and take it with you.
For a student that usually works in your favour. You are not paying a terrace markup and you are not losing forty minutes waiting for a bill. You walk out with the food and eat it where you like — on the grass at campus, back at the library, or at home.
What if you are hungry mid-afternoon?
Worth being exact about, because it is the difference between dinner and a wasted walk. The counter at Clariano 6 is open 1pm to 4pm and 7:30pm to 11:30pm — between four and half seven there is no pick-up. Online orders, though, run straight through: 1pm to 11:30pm, no break. So if your class finishes at six, do not walk over — order from your phone and it comes to you.
What do you order, and what is in it?
The core is Palestinian shawarma: beef, chicken or mixed, marinated for 24 to 48 hours and roasted slowly on a vertical spit rather than thrown on a griddle. That marinating time is the difference between meat that tastes of spice on the outside and meat that tastes of spice all the way through.
If you do not eat meat, the falafel is fully plant-based — chickpeas, herbs, fried to order — and works just as well in bread or on a plate. And if you want something other than ordinary chips, the patatas lux come with za'atar, the Palestinian blend of thyme, sesame and sumac.
Is it really halal?
Yes, and that deserves a precise answer rather than a slogan. All the meat we serve is halal and comes from certified halal suppliers; in Valencia our butcher is Carnicería al Amal. The shop itself does not hold its own certificate — what is certified is the source of the meat, which is what determines whether what you eat is halal. We go into it properly in Is shawarma halal?.
How do you get the best price?
By ordering direct. In practice most orders land between €9 and €12 when you order direct. Delivery platforms add their commission on top of that, so the fairest price is always ordering direct — either collecting at Clariano 6 or through our own page. If it is your first order, there is a 10% welcome discount when you sign up.
If you live outside Algirós, or simply cannot face the walk, we deliver too — explained in shawarma delivery in Valencia and Madrid.
